Welcome to “The Thingery”–a lending library of things. The Thingery at the Mukwonago Community Library is a wondrous assortment of equipment and experiences for our community to check out – from GoPro cameras to zoo passes. The collection provides diverse opportunities for lifelong learning, creativity, and engagement by providing the physical tools necessary to explore new areas of interest and learn new skills.

Need a few things to try out that new craft?

  • Book Binding Machine: Create your own school, work, or personal comb bound book with this manual punching and binding operation with only two steps.   • Die Cut/Embosser: The Die Cut/Embosser is great for embossing, texturizing, card making, and home décor projects. It works well with cardstock, craft metal, fabric, mat, and more. Kit includes over 50 dies.
  • Engraver: The engraver works with tile, metal, stone, wood, and glass. Five variable depth & speed, high power 15W and 7200 strokes per minute. Comes with a letter/number template to aid in etching words and numbers.
  • Glue Guns: The Library has an AdTech Mini Basic Glue Gun that provides fast, safer bonds of delicate materials like foam, lace, ribbon, and synthetic fabric, as well as virtually all other materials. The library includes 2 glue sticks. The user must provide additional glue sticks if needed for a personal project.
  • Graphics Drawing Tablet: The Wacom INTUOS drawing tablet has been designed for those who are getting started drawing, painting, or photo editing on their Mac or PC.
  • Jewelry Tool Kit: The jewelry repair kit makes jewelry making and repair easy and smooth. Includes 3 jewelry pliers, 6 needles, 1 straight tweezers, 1 bent tweezers, 1 caliper, 1 awl, 1 jump ring opener, 1 bead embroidery needle, 1 thread scissors, 1 tape measure, 1 needle threader, in a zipper pouch.
  • Metal Stamping Kit: Metal Stamping Kit is a jewelry-making & hand stamping kit that includes everything a beginner maker or artisan needs to get started with DIY jewelry and hand-stamping.
  • Photo Studio Light Box: No assembly required. Collapses into a portfolio case. High-output built-in LED lights for handheld photography with a camera or smartphone.   • Tracing Light Box: The tracing light box is a great tool for the budding artist who needs precise tracing and drawing capabilities. The pad is light, thin, and provides a bright evenly illuminated surface that allows the user to trace and draw with ease.
  • Woodburning Kit: The kit comes with 21 varieties of tips including a razor blade and soldering tip. The burner has a rubber handle that makes it easy to use for both wood and leather projects. Recommended for ages 14+ with adult supervision.

Explore Passes

Your library card can grant you and other guests access to exciting locations throughout Wisconsin with our Explore Passes! Funding for the Explore Passes are generously provided by the Friends of the Library.

 

  • Betty Brinn Children’s Museum: The library has a pass to the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum in Milwaukee. The pass admits up to six people and includes discounted parking.
  • Boerner Botanical Gardens: Explore a rose garden, peony garden, and daylily garden; stroll under blossoming crabapples; and enjoy the view while having a light lunch in the cafe or a special holiday brunch in the Garden Room. The library has two passes available. Each admits two adults and three children (16 and younger).
  • East Troy Railroad Museum: (Pass availability will resume in late April, 2024.): The library has a total of four passes:  Two of the passes admit two adults and two children, while the other two passes admit two adults and four children. 
  • Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame: The pass packet is good for free admission for up to two adults and three children 17 and under. The pass does not include stadium tours.
  • Horwitz-DeRemer Planetarium: Be dazzled by the Horwitz-Deremer Planetarium in the Retzer Nature Center. The pass provides admission for up to six immediate family members and may be used for public shows only.
  • Milwaukee Art Museum: Enjoy a day with the arts at the world-famous Milwaukee Art Museum. The pass admits up to four adults and any child under 18. The pass also provides discounts on parking and museum purchases.
  • Milwaukee County Zoo: The library has four passes for the Milwaukee County Zoo. Each pass admits up to eight people and includes parking for one vehicle.
  • Mitchell Park Domes: Explore the renowned Mitchell Park Domes. The library has three passes available, each of which admits one adult and three guests.
  • Racine Art Museum: Free admission for two adults as well as accompanying children and grandchildren; four guests admitted free when accompanied by card holder. Discount on purchases from the Museum Store.
  • Schlitz Audubon Nature Center: Located north of Milwaukee on Lake Michigan, at 1111 E. Brown Deer Rd., the Center offers six miles of trails through 185 acres of forests, wetlands, restored prairies, ravines, bluffs, and a shoreline. The pass is good for free admission for two adults and any children or grandchildren under 17 years of age.
  • Waukesha County Historical Society & Museum: The WCHSM artifact and archival collection includes more than 18,000 objects, 250,000 images, millions of archival materials, and innumerable stories that make up the community of Waukesha County. The pass admits two adults and two children.
  • Wisconsin Historical Society: Pass includes free admission to the following historic sites & museums: Wisconsin Historical Museum, Old World Wisconsin, Black Point Estate and Gardens, Wade House, Circus World, Villa Louis, Stonefield, H.H. Bennett Museum, Reed School, First Capitol, Pendarvis, and Madeline Island Museum. This is a seven-day loan for two adults and any children under the age of 18 living in the same household.

Game On!

  • Nintendo Switch (2): The Switch is a gaming system designed to go wherever you do, transforming from home console to portable system in a snap. The library has two consoles pre-loaded with games.
  • PlayStation 4 Pro: The PS4 Pro is designed to take favorite PS4 games and add better graphics, performance, or features for a 1080p HD TV or 4K HDR TV.
  • Xbox One S Console: The Microsoft Xbox One X system combines a great gaming console with the ability to watch television and movie content as well as listen to music or chat with others via Skype. The console comes with two controllers.

Super-sized Games: Take some humongous games home with you for giant-sized fun!

Regular-sized Games: Drop by the library and pick up something fun for your next picnic or evening at home.

Make Music

  • Electric Guitar Pack: A perfect choice for beginners, the Squier Stratocaster Pack has everything you need to begin playing right out of the box. The Stratocaster HT is ideal for beginning players. The included Fender guitar amp is the perfect companion for jamming.
  • Karaoke Machine: Features RCA output jacks to connect to your TV for scrolling lyrics, 1 microphone jack. Bluetooth enabled and plays CD/CD+Graphics. Built-in ceiling & speaker disco lighting.

  • Ukuleles: That’s right. You can check out a ukulele from the library and become the Don Ho of Mukwonago! The library has five adult-size ukuleles and five children’s-size ukuleles.

Memory Lab On-The-Go

  • CD Burner/ DVD Reader External Drive: The portable drive is plug & play with dual USB ports A & C. Media player is necessary to play music or view a movie.
  • Camcorder: Capture your most precious memories with the Canon Vixia HF R800 camcorder. Easy to use and bring with you.
  • Cassette MP3 Converter: The Reshow Portable Cassette Player converts those old tape cassettes to MP3 files.
  • Digital Camera: The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 Digital Camera is a point-and-shoot camera featuring a large 20.1MP MOS sensor. The camera also features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity to support direct image transfer to linked smartphones and tablets.
  • Digital VHS Converter (requires a VHS player): Capture/record video from VHS, Hi8, Camcorder, set-top box, or any source with composite/S-video RCA AV outputs. It is also a standalone converter to MP4 format without the need for a PC. Includes RCA cable, USB cable, power adapter, SD card, reader, & instructions.
  • Digital Voice Recorder: The WS-852 Olympus digital voice recorder features Intelligent Auto Mode, which automatically adjusts the recording level to match the volume of the sound source.
  • Document Scanner: The Brother portable color document scanner offers fast document digitization through wireless networking or USB to PC connection. Its portable design makes it extremely mobile and versatile, allowing for maximum scans of 8.5 x 71 inches. The scanner is best suited to paper documents rather than photographs or documents on fragile paper.

  • Wolverine Moviemaker Pro 8mm/Super 8 Film to Digital Converter: The Wolverine Moviemaker-Pro will convert your movie reels into digital movies (no sound) in just a few steps.

Outdoor Fun

  • Bubble Machine: This bubble machine pumps out a ton of bubbles. It’s lightweight and portable. It holds 1½ bottles of bubble liquid which is included in the kit. Power adapter included.
  • Canopy 10’ x 10’ (Slant Leg): Stay shaded at the beach, your backyard, or an outdoor market with this EAGLE PEAK canopy tent. Featuring an innovative push system, the canopy locks into place with a simple push-for-no-fuss setup. Comes with a wheeled carrying case. Not available until late Spring, 2024.
  • Folding Table: A portable folding table with a carrying handle. Perfect for outdoor & indoor activities. The library has two.

  • Inflatable Portable Movie Screen: The Nozzco 10′ inflatable screen offers a cinematic experience in any backyard. Not available until late Spring, 2024.

Seasonal Outdoor Fun

  • Kayak: The library has two Sun Dolphin Aruba ’10 sit-in kayaks. Great for river and lake trips, they feature adjustable foot braces, padded seat and protective thigh pads. It weighs 40 lb. and has a 250-pound weight limit. The Library does NOT supply life preservers. Not available until late Spring, 2024.
  • Paddleboard: The 10′  Flow 106 paddleboard is for paddlers looking for a great all-around board for both adults and older children. Multiple handles allow for easy transportation. The paddleboard weighs 46 lb. and has a 230-pound weight limit. The library has two paddleboards. Not available until late Spring, 2024.
  • Sled: These great snow sled toboggans will have you speeding down the hill in record time. The library has three sleds: Blue, Red, and Yellow.
  • Snow Fort Kit: The Library has two snow fort kits which include rectangular building brick molds for snow castles, igloos, & walls. Protect your fort or castle with snowballs quickly made with the snowball makers– the ultimate snowball fight.
  • Snowshoes: Try your hand (or foot) at snowshoeing! The Library has snowshoe kits for users of all sizes. Each kit includes a pair of snowshoes, a carry bag, and a pair of adjustable trekking poles.
  • Toboggan: The classic toboggan is constructed in Canada with northern hardrock maple. The center and outside slats are stained in rich walnut. It is a great way to enjoy the outdoors during the winter.

Tech Tools

  • Document Camera: 8MP camera captures ultra high definition images. The camera captures high definition resolutions up to 3264 x 2448, perfect for live presentations, scanning books, magazines, documents, QR codes, OCR text or archiving photos. Also works well as an alternative to an overhead projector using both a laptop and projector. Compatible with Windows and Mac.)

  • Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot: Bring the Internet home with you. Each hotspot can connect up to 10 devices. The library has 18 hotspots.
  • Paper Shredder: Shredder has an adjustable arm to fit shredder on waste basket edges. Paper width: 9 1/2″; sheet capacity: 3 sheets; shred size: 1/4″ wide, straight cut.
  • Portable Projectors: The Library has two portable projectors: the P300 Neo Pico Projector and the GooDee Portable Projector. Take your business presentations anywhere or turn any wall into a big screen for movies and slide shows.
  • Portable Movie Screen: Need a movie screen for a special occasion but don’t want to buy one? Check out our Camp Chef Lite Portable 92″ movie screen. Indoors or outdoors, it’s great for movies, business seminars, sporting events, gaming, and more.
  • Portable Speaker: The MaxSound Plus, a Bluetooth, wireless, 24-watt mini speaker delivers strong sound with extra bass. It is waterproof and has a built-in rechargeable battery that can last for 20 hours.
  • Roku Streaming Stick +: Roku is a small device that streams movies, music, and other entertainment to your TV via the internet. Since Roku streams (rather than downloads) video, you get instant access to a huge library of entertainment without having to store files on a computer or hard drive. The library has two Roku Streaming Sticks.

Orion StarBlast Tabletop Telescope: A perfect telescope for beginning amateur astronomers, the StarBlast 4.5″ Astro Altazimuth reflector tabletop telescope is uncomplicated, with simple design, and high level of performance. Everyone in the family will enjoy using it.

Tool Time

  • Diagnostic Car Reader: Not sure what all those warning lights mean on your car dashboard? The Ancel  Diagnostic Car Code Reader detects the engine system and reads and clears the error codes. The scanner works on all 1996 and newer cars, light-duty trucks, SUVs, and minivans sold worldwide.
  • Digital Multimeter: The Innova multimeter has auto-ranging scales that eliminate the need to dial in the correct range when making electronic measurements. The unit offers a large-scale digital display and color-coded LEDs for battery quick check.

Early Literacy Kits

“Little Sprouts” Early Literacy Kits

  • All Ready for Toddler Time Readiness Kit: Includes learning tools designed to help teach: numbers, counting, alphabet skills, colors and shapes, and fine motor skills.

  • Colors: Each Infant + Toddler Bag is packaged in a durable carrying tote and includes a step-by-step activity guide and contents to complement each theme: The Colors Bag develops a toddler’s understanding of color and the ability to sort or categorize objects according to their size and color. The kit also focuses on naming objects and developing language.
  • Crash, Boom, Bang!- (for 1’s): Use the materials provided in this kit to help your child explore the developmental skill of imitation. Model how to use the items while allowing your child the freedom to explore new ways to play with the toys.
  • “I Have to Go!” Potty Training Kit: An assortment of board books, a parenting guide, DVDs, and an incentive chart–everything you need to get the little ones ready to “go.”
  • Rhyming: Start off your child with rhyming. This backpack includes three board books, two puppets, and a laminated activity guide.
  • Snake Length: Introduces children to the concept of length by measuring toy snakes and other objects. The backpack includes two books; a Melissa and Doug sack of 6 plastic snakes; 1 jumbo tape measure; 1 Unifix ladder; 100 Unifix snap cubes; and an activity guide with recommendations for using the kit.
  • Today I Feel…: The Today I Feel… kit is a great way to teach kids about emotions and feelings. The kit includes a Big Feelings Pineapple that allows kids to make a variety of faces on both sides, the Feelings & Dealings family card game, a large flipbook that helps kids identify feelings and make positive choices, and the book “I Want To Be Mad For a While!” by Barney Saltzberg.
  • Words, Musical Words:  This backpack introduces children to language arts by focusing on words dealing with music.   • Exploring the Night Sky: Intended to encourage childrn 8 years and older to explore the night sky, this backpack includes astronomy binoculars, the book, “Astronomy for Kids” by Bruce Betts, a planisphere, a constellation guide and parents guide.
  • I Can Draw!: Learn to draw everything from rockets to robots, monkeys to monsters…. there is lots to create by following the step-by-step instructions in each book.
  • Frog Math: Frog math is a great way for children to learn basic math skills and concepts of weight and balance. The kit has 3 different levels of difficulty to maintain the child’s interest. Geared for ages 4-8.
  • Gears! Gears! Gears!– Beginner’s Building Set: A building set with easy-to-assemble interlocking gears, bases, and connectors for imaginative play and creative challenges.
  • GravityMaze: A player draws a challenge card and places towers on the grid as indicated. The goal is to create a maze that will carry a marble from the start position to the target tower.
