Meet MCL’S New Library Director: Abby Armour

The Mukwonago Community Library welcomes Abby Armour as the new Library Director beginning May 10. Abby has over three years of experience as the Library Director of the Johnson Creek Public Library and is looking forward to using her wealth of experiences to continue growing MCL for the community.

Abby is originally from Luck, a small village of 1,227 people in northwestern Wisconsin, and graduated from UW-Madison with a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 2010. After spending three years teaching high school English, she quit to pursue her goal of becoming a librarian, studying for her Master’s degree from UW-Milwaukee while working at Anytime Fitness in Madison. She became the Library Media Specialist for Johnson Creek School District in 2015, and then transitioned to public librarianship in 2018 when the Director of the public library retired. “Two library positions in the whole village and I’ve been in both!” laughs Abby about her time working in the community.

At Johnson Creek Public Library, Abby increased the usage of the library by remodeling and rearranging the space to be more inviting and by providing outreach such as Pop Up Libraries in the parks and delivery of curricular materials to the school and daycare. Abby has experience working in all parts of a library and plans to use that knowledge to connect with the MCL staff and identify opportunities for change. “The director of a small library has to wear a lot of hats,” Abby notes. “I have experience as the children’s librarian, doing outreach, cataloging, selecting materials, and managing technology, as well as grant writing, project management, strategic planning, and building community connections. I think this broad knowledge base will give me insight into problem solving issues with my team as well as provide a global understanding of how all aspects of a library work together.”

Abby passionately believes in the importance of public libraries and considers building a strong team of skilled librarians is essential to keeping the library innovative and adaptive. She understands that the library is an essential part of the community and actively seeks out input, making forward-thinking decisions that will best serve the community.

Abby lives in Waukesha with her husband, Peter Blenski, who is the children’s librarian at Hartland Public Library, and their fuzzy dog, Loki, who loves to eat carrots. She and Peter sometimes do children’s programs together and can be seen acting quite silly in their adaptations of Mo Willem’s Elephant & Piggie books on Johnson Creek Public Library’s YouTube channel. In her free time, Abby enjoys working in and battling with her yard, sewing dresses on a machine older than herself, and building wooden things that are useful.
